Melbourne Funk Festival - The Talent

The Brown Hornet - By far the most well known Melbourne based contemporary Funk act. This group produces a visual funk explosion combined with a unique blend of musical genres from Funk / Punk / Metal / Latin to Trip Hop Dub Ska Fusion with a touch of jazz thrown in. Dylan Lewis provides an unending display of tricks such as Fire breathing, fire eating, juggling and magic tricks. The Brown Hornet released their debut EP in March this year.

DJ Mr Takse - One of the founding fathers of the Melbourne Funk Scene and widely regarded as the Master of turntable Funk. Initiator of the now famous Coco Butter on Friday nights at the Lounge, Mr Takse draws on his enormous resource of Acid Jazz, Latin and Old School Funk. Currently Mr Takse is enjoyed by Melbourne on his regular Saturday show on Kiss FM.

Metta Bass n’ Breath (Syd) - Currently in New York, these Sydney based hip-hopsters have cemented a loyal following around the country. Metta Bass, signed to Creative Vibes, is a raw fusion of hip hop sounds with the interplay of freestyle rapping and sounds from around the world. Taking part in the national Lino tour with World DMC Champion, DJ Noise, from Denmark in January 1997 has helped give them a national presence.

Teriyaki Anarki Sarki - The Teriyaki crew, now famous in Melbourne, for their innovative Thursday night club at the Red Room will transform the Public bar into an assault of hip grinding, ear blasting acid break beat techno.

Raw Sugar (Syd) - One of Sydney’s Funkiest bass players combined with awesome vocals. Raw Sugar have recently been on tour with Skunkhour playing the Snow Venues. Projecting a never ending party atmosphere through up beat tunes that are down right funky.

Kaleidavibe (Byron) - This 4 piece Jazz / Funk unit pump out infectious grooves supported by intensely funky bass lines. Having released their Debut EP in November laster year, the K-Vibe have been up and down the East Coast of Australia a few times since then and received JJJ airplay for their song Common Man

DJ Ransom - Ransom is in high demand around Melbourne. Famous for bringing a diverse range of grooves to any dance floor. Known to play up to 4 gigs in one night ranging from Funk to Hip Hop and Drum n’ Bass. Beat mixer extrodinare, with an unrivalled ability to read the vibe of a crowd.

Paradox (Adel) - A Funk riff meets a techno back beat. Known for their sexually explicit lyrics and throwing great parties. Residents of the ‘Cargo Club’ one of Adelaide’s Funkiest clubs. Fuglemen - The Fuglemen in their literal form, translate into spokesmen of their craft. Rappers Quromistix and Muskrat lead the charge into complex lyrical behaviour with an emphasis on their fabled freestyle techniques. Bass, courtesy of Jeremy Glover, adds the backbone for flavour; sparse kicks, snares and banging hats are Joey Bruno's domain while Ben Timmis fills all and every space with his resonating riffs. Turntablism is courtesy of Dj Madcap whose scratch and and general turntable antics add fury to the flow while on percussion, Tyson Ballard transforms his tribal sound into molten movement.

DJ Voiteck - Known around Australia for his hard-edged, minimal, raw, energetic live performances. Voiteck is able to create metallic atmospheres that co-exist with futuristic beat structures. Currently running his own label and playing many gigs around Australia, the main emphasis of the music is an exploration of minimal techno and the electro/break realms being pioneered via the hip hop culture. Banana Oil - This incredible line up features the amazing Tim Neal one of this countries finest Hammond Organ players, and Nikki Bomba from the Truth on drums. Banana oil pump out an ultra hip lounge vibe.

DJ Chewy - One of the up an coming Female DJs with a show on Kiss FM, can often be seen on Saturday nights at the Up Top Bar in the City. Expect Chewy to mix it up traversing the sounds of Dub, funky electro sounds and a bit of Drum n’ Bass.

Kylie Auldist & Heavy Earth -. Kylie’s voice is penetrating, soulful and emotive, blending with the rest of the band to produce funk, R&B and Soul grooves. Watch out for Al Barden from Frente on Drums.

RumbleFish - Combining traditional funk grooves with DJ orientated sounds care of DJ Peril, this group pumps out a funky that is guaranteed to rock the room. One of the highlights is the ‘Reverend’ on Hammond organ. Currently Rumble Fish play every Monday at the Evelyn and Wednesdays at the Esplanade Hotel.

Big Charlie - Having played nearly 200 gigs and toured to New Zealand, released 2 EPs, and regular gigs on both sides of the Yarra. Big Charlie explore the more hardcore side of funk combining the elements of Beasty Boys with Rage against the Machine and throwing in their own individual slant.

Sedan - Sedan bring feel to musicality and musicality to feel. Theirs is a big sound rooted in the R&B, Jazz, Funk and Soul schools while retaining its Australian feel. A 6 piece Ben Hur not to be missed and known for their crazy on stage antics and bizarre giveaways. Recently they launched their debut Album to some 550 admiring fans.
